The HQ

The World Explorer's Headquarters serves as the recruitment office for new explorers and it also serves as home base for the User. The HQ has gone through many transformations. We wanted to make sure we had an open environment that was high tech, yet visually appealing.

Animals of the Safari

Safari animals are some of the most recognizable and popular animals around. We all love lions, hippos, giraffes, cheetahs, zebras, etc. When it was time to choose the animals we would feature, there really was no science behind it. Our main characters were chosen as result of the personalities we attributed to them and our personal experiences and/or views on some of these animals. Our main characters went through a series of makeovers, but they are finally finished! Here we have a picture of the before and after. What do you guys think?

Arturo, the monkey, is intelligent, friendly and honest. Oscar, the lion, has the heart of a warrior. Esteban, the elephant, is clumsy and scared, but loyal to a fault. Isabela, the giraffe, is friendly and lovable. Umi, the zebra, is the coolest girl around.

A lot of time and effort went into creating their personalities and modeling the characters after what we imagined in our heads and what we put down on paper. Our background characters, however, were a little different. We came up with a list and animals you would typically find in the African Savanna, and gave the list to our talented 3D modeler, Vincent. Check out some of his awesome work below:

The models he created are wonderful, and some of them were bursting with personality. As the story unfolds, some of these take on a life of their own. As we write these lessons, we find inspiration in the scenery and characters we create. The process is becoming more organic (and more complicated!) as we don't merely dictate the visual aspect of the game, but the visuals inspire and drive the story.

What do you think of these characters? Stay tuned as we will bring you guys more updates on the rigging and skinning of the characters and the voices that bring them to life! Thanks for keeping tabs on us!

The Spanish Safari Game World

Spanish Safari takes place in the western plains of Africa. This semitropical biome is characterized by open grasslands with a smattering of trees and is home to some of the most beloved animals in the world. Lions, zebras, monkeys, rhinos, antelopes, and giraffes are just a few of the animals that call the African Savanna home. There are two seasons in the savanna; the rainy and the dry season. The animals and plants of the savanna have adapted extremely well to these periods of rainfall and drought. We wanted to make sure we could create a beautiful and functional game world to enchant and entertain children, while making it conducive to learning. We hope you enjoy!

¡Adiós Amigos!

It All Starts with Arturo

We started this project with two ideas in mind: we wanted to teach Spanish to young children and we wanted to center the project around the idea of going on a safari. Safari is the Swahili word for journey and our goal is to take children on a journey in which they can become more familiar with the Spanish language. One of our first thoughts was that when going on Safari you would need a guide and we found the perfect guide in Arturo. Arturo is a young monkey (a Vervet monkey to be exact)  who lives in the African Savanna. Arturo is friendly, brave, intelligent, and willing to do anything for his friends and family.

In our initial discussions regarding Arturo we knew what his personality would be like. However, we didn't really know what he would look like. He has gone through a few design changes and evolved from a really goofy looking guy to a cute character we have come to love.

We thought Arturo should have big eyes and ears to make him cute. But, how big is too big?

This little guy seemed more like Arturo's little brother (more on him later) than Arturo himself. So we kept him on the back burner. We made a few changes to this guy, and we finally had Arturo!

Now Thomas, our amazing 3D animator, is working on bringing Arturo to life. Check out the video below to see him in action.

We really love Arturo and we hope that kids and parents will love him to. In order to finish bringing him to life, however, we need to find Arturo's perfect voice.  We're still on the hunt, but we will make sure to keep you guys updated.

See you guys in the savanna!

Welcome to Our Blog

¡Hola! Welcome to our blog! We are Learn Safari – a team of teachers, designers and developers from around the world who are working to change the way children learn. Our first project; Spanish Safari, teaches young children (5-10 years old) Spanish in a fun, interactive, and intuitive way. Children are hardwired to learn languages and we wanted to make a learning system that would capitalize on their natural abilities and on their love of games.

Spanish Safari is seeking bright young kids to help The World Explorers on a mission in the African Savanna. Jason Digby, the Head of the WE, is ready to take on some new mentors and has found the best guide in Arturo Mono, who will guide your child and teach him or her Spanish throughout the mission.

The purpose of this blog is to share with you our process. We will keep you updated on the creation of Spanish Safari, our wacky designs, gaming strategies, approaches to learning and even some of the crazy antics of our team. We hope that you enjoy the process as much as we are enjoying it, that you will share with us your thoughts and ideas, and that we can bring to you the best that we can possibly offer.
